Talking to your doctor about pain is often the most difficult part of a doctor's visit. Our society has conditioned us to seldomg speak about how we really are. How often to you meet someone you know on the street and answer the inevitable question of "How are you?" with "Fine, and you?" even if you have been up half the night and are in pain? Below are some questions to ask yourself to help you describe your pain to your physician concisely and, more importantly, precisely. Jot down the answers and take them with you the next time you see your doctor.
Where do you feel pain?
Be sure to tell your doctor all the places you feel pain. You should also note when your pain first began-and any changes in the location of your pain since then.
What time of day do you feel pain?
Take note of when you are feeling pain. Is there a pattern to your pain?
What words would you use to describe your pain?
When talking to your doctor, it is best to be specific. Instead of using words like "discomfort," try to use more descriptive terms: tingling, burning, numbing, dull, and throbbing are good examples.
How severe is your pain?
If you were to rate the severity of your pain on a scale of one to ten (ten being extreme pain) what number would represent the degree of your pain?
What activities cause you to feel pain?
Do you feel pain when you're walking? Working? Note the specific activities that cause your pain to act up. It's also important to tell your doctor if you find yourself avoiding these everyday activities due to the pain you're feeling.
Is your pain preventing you from engaging in your everyday life?
It is important to let your doctor know if your pain is affecting your everyday activities. Do you avoid others because you are in pain?
What are you doing to manage your pain, and is it helping?
Talk to your doctor about how effective your current pain management solutions are. Should you consider other soltions?
